The good news just keeps on coming because the original Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hairspray is set to land in Sydney in early 2023.
Making its home at Sydney Lyric Theatre from February, celebrated Director Jack O’Brien (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and Choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots) will lead the original Broadway creative team to present the big hair and big-hearted musical Hairspray in Australia.
If that wasn’t already music to your ears, they have assembled an absolutely stellar cast of Australia’s favourite performers to bring Hairspray the musical to life on Australian stages.
Much-loved performer Shane Jacobson will star as beloved housewife Edna Turnblad, the hilarious Todd McKenney will perform as Wilbur Turnblad, Rhonda Burchmore as the villainous Velma Von Tussle, Rob Mills as the lovable Corny Collins, Asabi Goodman as the powerhouse Motormouth Maybelle, and Australian musical theatre veteran Donna Lee will also take the stage. Making her professional musical theatre debut Carmel Rodrigues will take on the role of Tracy Turnblad.
For those unfamiliar, Hairspray the musical, takes you back to 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland. It tells the story of dance-loving teenager Tracy Turnblad who has one dream – to dance on The Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star, and now she must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network.
The Broadway production of Hairspray the musical has toured nationally across the US and its West End production was nominated for a record-breaking 11 Olivier Awards. In 2007, it was also adapted as a film starring John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, and Zac Efron.
