It's time to take a trip to Middle-earth™! The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale, the stage production based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic trilogy beloved by generations of readers, will make its Australian premiere at the State Theatre, Sydney from 7 January 2025.
The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale, will make its Australian debut this January at Sydney’s State Theatre, before heading to Crown Theatre, Perth in March.
The production arrives on Australian shores following the 70th anniversary of the publication of The Fellowship of the Ring. Longtime fans and newcomers alike will see the full trilogy of books ‘The Lord of the Rings’ brought to life on stage by a cast of multi-skilled actor-musicians, in a theatrical event that celebrates the sweeping fantasy epic.

What is The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale about?
The musical celebrates one of the most famous stories written – but with a musical twist.
As the Hobbits mark Bilbo Baggins’ eleventy-first birthday in the Shire, Bilbo gifts his nephew Frodo a priceless gold ring. This pivotal gift sets Frodo on an epic, perilous journey across Middle-earth™ to the dark lands of Mordor, where he must battle evil with the help of his devoted Fellowship.

What kind of music is to be expected?
Showgoers are in with a treat as the musical tells the iconic story-line as the vibrant, folk-inspired score is performed live on stage, blending original music with the narrator. The musical features a book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna known for their work in Maddie and La Cava, aswell as Matthew Warchus who gained fame for Groundhog Day.

Likewise, original music by Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman who worked on iconic productions such as Bombay Dreams and Slumdog Millionaire. To add even more charm they have music from Finnish folk band Värttinä, and Tony Award winner Christopher Nightingale of Matilda the Musical.
