Based on the Universal Pictures/Amblin Entertainment film, BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical has a book by Bob Gale, new music and lyrics by Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Alan Silvestri and six-time Grammy Award-winning Glen Ballard, with additional songs from the film including “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Australian producer John Frost for Crossroads Live Australia said, “I am thrilled to be bringing BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical to Australia, premiering at the Sydney Lyric in September 2025. Australian audiences are going to be blown away to see how this iconic story has been recreated for the stage. Whether a fan of the movies or not, this is a show for everyone, and I can guarantee that you will leave the theatre on an absolute high! We are excited to be partnering with Colin Ingram on the production, and for the support of Destination New South Wales and the NSW Government, who have again guaranteed that Sydney has access to world class musical theatre.”
The musical is based on the first film which sees rock ‘n’ roll teenager Marty McFly accidentally transported back to 1955 in a time-travelling DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown. But before he can return to 1985, Marty must make sure his high school-aged parents fall in love in order to save his own existence.
Meet Australia’s Doc!
Tony Award winner Roger Bart will don the boiler suit and voice-activate the time travelling DeLorean for the Australian Premiere season of BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical, reprising the beloved role of Dr. Emmett Brown; a character made famous originally by Christopher Lloyd in the first Back to the Future movie.
In 2020 Roger originated the iconic role of ‘Doc Brown’ to much acclaim and rave reviews. After performances in Manchester and the West End, he reprised the role on Broadway, receiving a Tony Award nomination for his performance.
“We are thrilled to have the esteemed and brilliant Roger Bart join our incredible Australian cast for the Australian Premiere season in Sydney. Roger has enthralled West End and Broadway audiences, so we can’t wait for Aussies to have the pleasure of witnessing his interpretation of ‘Doc’ on our shores.” – Australian producer John Frost
Introducing Australia’s Future Boy!
Rising star Axel Duffy will don the iconic puffer vest and ride the skateboard for the Australian Premiere season of BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical, taking on the beloved role of Marty McFly—the time-traveling teen originally brought to life by Michael J. Fox in the classic 1985 film.
“From the moment Axel Duffy walked into the audition room, we knew we were seeing something special. His energy, charm, and authenticity perfectly capture the spirit of Marty McFly. Back to the Future is a pop culture phenomenon, and casting a talent like Axel in the lead role ensures the heart of the story will shine brightly for Australian audiences. I’m thrilled to welcome him to the time-traveling adventure.” – Tony Award winning director John Rando.
