Tony and GRAMMY award-winning Hadestown is coming to town!
The acclaimed musical phenomenon HADESTOWN is coming to Theatre Royal Sydney but what is Hadestown about?
Streamed by over 350 million, seen by millions and a fan hit all around the world, singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s acclaimed West End and Broadway musical production Hadestown will make its Australian debut at Theatre Royal Sydney in February 2025.
Presented by Opera Australia and JONES Theatrical Group, Hadestown won eight Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in 2019, including ‘Best Score’ and ‘Best Director’ and has won a Grammy Award for ‘Best Musical Theatre Album’.
When was it created?
Originating as Anaïs Mitchell’s indie theatre project, Mitchell collaborated with theatre director Rachel Chavkin. Over the course of more than a dozen years, the genre blending musical was born! Hadestown amalgamate New Orleans jazz with modern American folk to tell the Greek mythological tale of Orpheus and Eurydice.
Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Jo Davies excitedly talked about this dynamic production finally coming to Australians.
I’m absolutely thrilled that we’re able to bring this incredible new musical to Australia for the first time, and I’m sure it will be as adored here has it has been overseas, finding a whole new legion of fans. Creator and writer Anaïs Mitchell is just such an amazing talent, I’m very much looking forward to working with her and her team to realise this production here.
What exactly is Hadestown about?
Hadestown invites audiences to experience the intertwining love stories of two couples: the youthful dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and the powerful King Hades and his devoted wife Persephone. This thrilling journey to the underworld and back is brought to life with Mitchell’s mesmerizing melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination.
The narrative pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love, creating a rich and immersive theatrical experience. As audiences follow these characters through their trials and triumphs, they are drawn into a world where love faces off against the forces of darkness, making Hadestown a must-see production for anyone seeking a profound and moving story.
Performed by an energetic ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, the musical delivers a rich story and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.
