For those unfamiliar with the cult classic film, Beauty and the Beast follows a selfish Prince who is cursed by a wicked enchantress, turning him into a hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return. Cue Belle… a village girl who embarks on a journey to save her father who has been captured by the Beast. Belle, who is subsequently imprisoned by the Beast works with the help of the enchanted servants to draw the cold-hearted beast out of his isolation and curse.

The original Australian production of Beauty and the Beast opened in Melbourne at the Princess Theatre in 1995 starring Rachel Beck in the role of Belle, a young Hugh Jackman as Gaston, and the late Bert Newton as Cogsworth. The production played for over two years across Melbourne and Sydney and won the 1996 ARIA Award for Best Australian Soundtrack/Cast/Show Release.
