The timeless romance of Belle and her Beast revitalised by an all-Australian cast at the iconic Capitol Theatre.
A glorious new production of Beauty and the Beast The Musical makes its Australian debut in Sydney and is now playing to sold out houses at the Capitol Theatre in Haymarket Sydney.
The new Disney production boasts spectacular new sets, costume designs and state-of-the-art technology fused together to bring the beloved and classic story of love to life on stage.
Directed and choreographed by Olivier Award nominee Matt West, the reimagined stage show will feature an all-star team led by West that includes original composer Alan Menken, lyricist Tim Rice, book writer Linda Woolverton, scenic designer Stan Meyer, costume designer Ann Hould-Ward and lighting designer Natasha Katz. The team collectively received five Tony® nominations and a win for Hould-Ward’s costume design, when Disney first debuted Beauty and the Beast on Broadway 28 years ago.
For those unfamiliar with the cult classic film, Beauty and the Beast follows a selfish Prince who is cursed by a wicked enchantress, turning him into a hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return. Cue Belle… a village girl who embarks on a journey to save her father who has been captured by the Beast. Belle, who is subsequently imprisoned by the Beast works with the help of the enchanted servants to draw the cold-hearted beast out of his isolation and curse.
The original Australian production of Beauty and the Beast opened in Melbourne at the Princess Theatre in 1995 starring Rachel Beck in the role of Belle, a young Hugh Jackman as Gaston, and the late Bert Newton as Cogsworth. The production played for over two years across Melbourne and Sydney and won the 1996 ARIA Award for Best Australian Soundtrack/Cast/Show Release.
