Everything to know about Australia’s newest tennis tournament
A brand-new tennis tournament has just landed in Australia and will kick off in late December. The United Cup is a new mixed tennis tournament replacing the ATP Cup.
If you’re a tennis fan based in Sydney, Perth, or Brisbane, this is the perfect opportunity to watch some world-class tennis live without a trip to Melbourne.
The tournament offers national teams going toe to toe and some of tennis’ most prominent names set to compete. Here is everything you need to know about the United Cup:
What is the United Cup?
The United Cup is a mixed tennis tournament played in a team competition format, replacing the ATP Cup. Teams will play four singles matches, two men’s and two women’s, and one mixed doubles match in the round-robin stage.
The ATP-WTA event, in partnership with Tennis Australia, will offer USD 15 million in prize money and up to 500 Pepperstone ATP and 500 WTA ranking points.
In a world-first, showcasing equality at the highest level of sport, 18 nations – comprising of four men and four women – will take on the best in the world to be crowned the inaugural champions.
Each host city will feature two groups of three countries competing in round-robin games. The three city champions will play in the United Cup Final Four in Sydney from Friday, 6 to Sunday, 8 January.
When is the United Cup?
Across Sydney, Perth and Brisbane, the United Cup will occur from Thursday, 29 December 2022, to Sunday, 8 January 2023. The games in Sydney will be held at Ken Rosewall Arena, and the Brisbane games will be held at Pat Rafter Arena.
