Blues break drought and seal Origin victory

New South Wales decided eight was enough as they sealed a drought-breaking series win in Game 2 of the State of Origin in Sydney on Wednesday night.

The victory snapped Queensland’s eight-series winning streak and gave long-suffering Blues fans something to cheer about.

Trent Hodkinson sealed victory for the Blues with a late try and conversion that gave them the advantage in the 6-4 score line over the Maroons. Queensland led for much of the match, converting two first half penalties into 4 points.

The victory made Blues coach Laurie Daley just the second man in NSW Origin history to win a series as a player, captain and coach.

The match was attended by more than 83,000 fans and was a ratings winner for Channel Nine, which recorded the biggest television audience of the year with an average audience of about 2.7 million.

A dead rubber Game 3 will be played in Brisbane on July 9.
