New For 2021

Sloan Peterson | From indie-rock to sublime storytelling with alt-pop charm

We're shining a spotlight on the best new Australian artists set to dominate 2021. Welcome Sydney-based indie-pop dreamer Sloan Peterson.

The Sloan Peterson Story

Combining the sounds of 50s guitar-pop and ’60s French rock with modern electro-pop, Sydney-based singer-songwriter Sloan Peterson could be best described as an indie-pop dreamer.

Growing up in Brisbane, Peterson – AKA Joannah Jackson – was surrounded by music; dancing, performing in musicals, singing, and playing the piano at church for as long as she can remember. In her early teen years she drifted away from music, but it was a move to Sydney that brought her back.

Finding home in the DIY-creative scene of the city’s southern suburbs, Peterson rediscovered her voice and her independence as an artist. Soon, she was carving out a name for herself on Sydney’s live scene fronting punk band The Black Zeros, before travelling to New York in pursuit of a music career with another project.

In 2017, Sloan Peterson the band came to life, earning radio support, bulk streams, and even a support slot alongside The Kooks in the process. But Peterson – the artist – was only getting started.

It’s a very different project now to what it was before. It’s more personal too. I’m writing from experience about relationships, hurt, family and misunderstandings.

Now, her latest single ‘Nightmare’ introduces a whole new side of the creative’s sound. Swapping ‘60s garage-indie-rock for a more alt-pop style, while still possessing her indie-pop charm and sublime storytelling, it is an exciting time to discover Sloan Peterson.
