Perth set to welcome Matilda the Musical
Western Australian theatre fans are in for a treat following the announcement that Matilda the Musical will perform a season at Crown Theatre Perth from February 2017.
It will be homecoming of sorts for Matilda the Musical as Tim Minchin – the man who wrote the production’s music and lyrics – first conceived the idea to adapt the classic Roald Dahl story for the stage while living in Western Australia’s capital.
The hit production is a major success the world over. Matilda has enjoyed long runs on London’s West End and New York’s Broadway and has already wowed audiences at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre. Matilda the Musical opened at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in March and very much lived up to the pre-show buzz.
The tale of Matilda is perfect for the stage. While it is completely appropriate for children, this show is in no way for children only. The witty songs and dialogue – coupled with plenty of grown up jokes – make Matilda the Musical a perfect event for all ages.
The performers are incredibly talented and really bring to life the characters of the show. Fans of the original Roald Dahl story or the movie version of Matilda will notice differences, but the story is largely the same and is very true to Dahl’s original vision.
The children in Matilda the Musical are phenomenal and it is enlightening to see a story that focuses on kids and in particular one very extraordinary little girl.
Minchin’s influence on the musical cannot be ignored. He is well known for his comedic prowess and he has always had a knack of writing and performing catchy, hilarious and sometimes controversial musical numbers. His contribution to Matilda the Musical is one of the major reasons for its success. The musical numbers are clever, funny and often poignant.
Matilda the Musical is one of Ticketmaster’s best reviewed events of all time. At the time of writing, the production has 1200-plus reviews and is rated a whopping 4.7 out of 5. Fan reviews allow Ticketmaster customers review and comment on particular events. Georgy Girl will land at Crown Theatre Perth between July 8 and 24 before Rolling Thunder Vietnam takes to the stage between August 17 and 20. And in late December, the incredible Adam Garcia will lead a brilliant cast in the production of Singin’ in the Rain. The classic is one of the most loved and enduring musicals of all time and will no doubt be a smash hit with WA live event fans.
Rounding out the amazing event line-up is Matilda the Musical, which will open in February 2017.
