To celebrate her new single, Perth/Boorloo-based singer-songwriter Jewel Owusu shares her favourite songs to drink ‘American Honey’ to

We pick the hottest new acts so you can tell your friends you heard them first. Meet Perth/Boorloo-based singer-songwriter Jewel Owusu on her new single 'American Honey'.

Perth/Boorloo based singer-songwriter and producer Jewel Owusu has crafted an intergalactic, genre-bending dream on her latest single ‘American Honey’.

Born in Hong Kong, and growing up in New Zealand, the half Filipino-half Ghanaian musician eventually made her way to Perth, Western Australia – where her musical journey really began to blossom.

Across a handful of release, Jewel Owusu has emerged as one of Perth’s most exciting up and coming names – and an artist all keen music fans should have on their radar. Ever since dropping her debut single ‘Susie’ back in 2020, she has continued to forge her own path thanks to her breezy, genre-mixing sound.

Bringing together textures and elements from pop, indie, hip hop, rock, electronic, R&B, and more, her sound can only be described as uniquely and expertly Jewel Owusu.

After making a strong debut in 2020 with two stunning singles, the following year began with her six-track debut EP mantra, before a trio of singles cemented Owusu’s presence in the national music scene. Now on her second single of the year, ‘American Honey’, Jewel Owusu continues to push her sonic boundaries, further shaping – or should we say, smashing – any expectations a listener might have about what to expect from her next.

‘American Honey’ is an enchanting journey. Here she fuses honey-smooth textures of R&B, with big pop hooks, ethereal indie splashes, glittering laidback beats, and building to a trap-inspired drop – all held together by Owusu’s smooth, sweet vocal and relatable storytelling.

Jewel Owusu may have started songwriting when she was 13, but it wasn’t until 2020 – and the time spent in lockdown with other creative friends – that she took the opportunity to work on her music more. From there, she hasn’t stopped releasing tracks, playing shows, and turning heads in her direction.

With support from the likes of Spotify, MTV Australia, triple j, unearthed, Complex AU, Cool Accidents, Pilerats, and more, with every release Jewel Owusu continues to add to her growing list of fans.

American Honey is a drink that I quite like! It’s sweet and it’s the smoothest and easiest whiskey to drink. It’s a metaphor for a situation tasting good and feeling good at the time and being super convenient, but you know the aftertaste of having a casual situation with someone who doesn’t respect you is going to leave a lot of damage in your life.
PSA: I don’t encourage touching alcohol when in a low place or feeling sad about someone, but if I were drinking American Honey in a healthy mental space and wanted to retrieve certain feelings, these are the songs I would be listening to.

“This song would be in the playlist simply because I love it. I found this song on TikTok and the chill vibes are immaculate enough to consume any beverage to.”

Audrey Nuna – Long Year

“This song is super contemplative. I love this whole album, and I love how Audrey Nuna reflects on the year she has had and questions the place she is currently in. Similar thoughts that I would have whilst indulging in a glass of American Honey –reflecting on the year that’s been and the place I’m at currently with my life and relationships.”

Spencer. – Automatic

‘You’ve been running round my mind all night babe / Leave me feeling hypnotised the right way / Loving you is problematic.’
I feel like this song fits a similar theme to my song ‘American Honey’. You know the person is bad for you, but you keep going back and keep thinking about them.”
