Matilda the Musical to take the magic to Perth

WA theatre fans are in for a treat following the announcement that Matilda the Musical will perform a season at Crown Theatre Perth from February 2017.

Matildas + TimIt will be homecoming of sorts for Matilda the Musical as Tim Minchin – the man who wrote the production’s music and lyrics – first conceived the idea to adapt the classic Roald Dahl story for the stage while living in Western Australia’s capital.

The hit production is a major success the world over. Matilda has enjoyed long runs on London’s West End and New York’s Broadway and has already wowed audiences at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre. Matilda the Musical opens at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre tonight and already there is major buzz around the show.

The tale of Matilda is perfect for the stage. While it is completely appropriate for children, this show is no way for children only. The witty songs and dialogue – coupled with plenty of grown up jokes – make Matilda the Musical a perfect event for all ages.

The performers are incredibly talented and really bring to life the characters of the show. Fans of the original Roald Dahl story of the movie version of Matilda will notice differences, but the story is largely the same and is very true to Dahl’s original vision.

The children in Matilda the Musical are phenomenal and it is enlightening to see a story that focuses on kids and in particular one very extraordinary little girl.Revolting group

Minchin’s influence on the musical cannot be ignored. He is well known for his comedic prowess and he has always had a knack of writing and performing catchy, hilarious and sometimes controversial musical numbers. His contribution to Matilda the Musical is one of the major reasons for its success. The musical numbers are clever, funny and often poignant.

Minchin was in town for Matilda the Musical’s opening night in Melbourne and was on hand to make the announcement that the event would soon be heading to Perth.

Matildas + Tim meetMelbourne’s four Matildas – Dusty, Alannah, Tiana and Ingrid – were buzzing when they met the musical genius for the first time. The young performers were on stage for a press conference when Tim Minchin wandered in. They were in awe of the man who provided the words they have been singing over and over and he was clearly excited to meet his newest Matildas.

If you are in Melbourne over the coming months, you have to take the opportunity to see Matilda the Musical before it moves on. And Perth fans should get very excited for their chance to see the production when it hits town in early 2017. Ticket details for the Perth Theatre Crown shows will be announced shortly.
