Matilda the Musical hits Melbourne
Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.
Melbourne, you are in for a TREAT.
Multi-award winning Matilda the Musical begins in Melbourne at the Princess Theatre, with previews starting from the March 13.
Yours truly was lucky enough to catch Matilda in its Australian premiere season at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. Attending on a Friday evening, it was a sold out affair with a packed foyer – and the staff were unfazed, happily providing booster seats for the younger children and providing assistance where needed.
As someone who loves the original Roald Dahl story, and relatively familiar with Tim Minchin’s lyrical style, this feels like a chocolate-and-peanut combination.
They are good in their own rights, but paired together can be unstoppable.
In adapting for musical, writer Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin respect and expand the original story, while keeping both dialogue and original musical numbers lively and cheeky.
On leaving the Sydney Lyric, there were only smiles all round, regardless of age.
Book early – tickets are selling fast.
Oh, and one last tip – make sure you don’t stray too far during the end of interval.
