Breathtaking masterpieces, spine-tingling movie soundtracks, thrilling soloists and unique collaborations, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra ’s 2020 season brings together genres and sounds from around the world in this marvellous season of classical concerts.
There’s a lot to choose from, and no matter your musical taste there is something for everyone. We’ve taken a deep dive into ASO’s 2020 season and handpicked some of the events you don’t want to miss.
2020 Season includes 102 concerts and features international conductors, and soloists from Estonia, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Israel, America, Japan, India, China, Russia, Hong Kong, Canada, New Zealand and Switzerland. A total of 33 Australian artists and 85 South Australian artists feature throughout the season.
Old tunes, new sounds
More than just Nirvana songs with some strings, Unplugged: Nirvana Reimagined will see the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra become a rock beat. Using Nirvana’s legendary MTV Unplugged performance in New York as inspiration, this show will take everything you think orchestral sounds should be and take it somewhere a whole lot heavier. Justin Burford (from End Of Fashion) has taken his Nirvana reinterpretations around the world, and alongside conductor Jessica Gethin these nights are going to be incredible. It’ll come to Thebarton Theatre on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 May. Tickets are on sale now.
Singer-songwriter Ben Folds is no stranger to working with an orchestra after spending more than a decade travelling around with some of the world’s best. Now he’ll perform his hit songs alongside some other special treats with the ASO. It is sure to be a special night at Thebarton Theatre on Thursday 19 March. Tickets are on sale now.
The Masters return
ASO’s Master Series returns in 2020 with ten programs, featuring some of the greatest composers of all time as well as exciting new work and repertoire ranging from the Baroque to music of today. The program opens with The Adventure Begins on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 February, celebrating the works of three Russian greats – Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky. Other highlights in the series include ASO Concertmaster Natsuko Yoshimoto taking on Brahms’ Violin Concerto on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 April, the return of Adelaide-born Andrew Bain (now the Principal Horn of the Los Angeles Philharmonic) for two nights of high calibre horn playing in Heroic Horns on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 June and Our Place, presented in partnership with the South Australian Museum, which includes the World Premiere by ASO Composer in Association Cathy Milliken and takes inspiration from South Australia’s incredible Ediacaran fossils on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October. The ten-part Masters series will take place at Adelaide Town Hall across 2020.
Classics Unwrapped
Guy Noble returns to unwrap the best bite-sized pieces of classical music in these exciting concerts each with their own unique theme – Magic and Christmas. From the mythical creatures, magical mishaps, and wizarding worlds that will take centre stage on Wednesday 12 February to the Christmas treats you can feast your ears on in December – this series is set to bring a whole lot of fun to Adelaide Town Hall.
