History

The AFL Indigenous All Stars celebrates the extraordinary talent and cultural richness that Indigenous players bring to Australian Rules Football. The concept began in 1973 when a team of the best Indigenous Australian players from all states and territories was assembled to tour Papua New Guinea, where they played against the local team. Initially experimental, this tour demonstrated the immense skill and camaraderie within Indigenous communities, setting the stage for what would become a cherished tradition in Australian football.

Over the years, the Indigenous All Stars game has evolved into a powerful platform for recognising the contributions of Indigenous players to the sport. A significant milestone came in 1994 when the All Stars played their first game in the Northern Territory against Collingwood. This marked the beginning of a long-running event that has gone beyond football, representing a deep connection to culture, country, and community. Each match has not only showcased thrilling on-field performances but also highlighted the importance of reconciliation and bridging gaps through sport.

Among the most iconic players who have represented the Indigenous All Stars are Cyril Rioli, who was instrumental in Hawthorn’s dynasty and secured multiple Premierships. Lance Franklin, one of the most prolific goal-scorers in AFL history and Adam Goodes, a two-time Brownlow Medallist, who made a lasting impact on Sydney with his versatility and leadership. These players, and many more, have elevated the Indigenous All Stars game to a celebration of both sporting excellence and cultural pride.

The most recent Indigenous All Stars game took place in 2015, when the team faced off against the West Coast Eagles in a pre-season clash. The match featured some of the league’s top Indigenous players, including Shaun Burgoyne, Shane Edwards, and Jarrod Harbrow. After an intense and closely contested battle, West Coast emerged victorious by 8 points. Shaun Burgoyne’s outstanding performance earned him the Polly Farmer Medal as the best player on the field.
