Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s 1978 hit Evita will open at Sydney Opera House next September as Opera Australia’s annual musical.

In partnership with commercial producer John Frost, and with UK producer David Ian on board, Opera Australia presents a re-creation of the original West End and Broadway version of Evita.

The Australian production is directed by Broadway legend Hal Prince, and opens at the Joan Sutherland Theatre from September 2018.

John Frost and Opera Australia Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini said in a statement, “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to recreate the renowned original production of Evita 40 years after it opened in the West End, following the wonderful success of My Fair Lady … To have the original creative team of Hal Prince, Larry Fuller (choreographer) and Timothy O’Brien (designer) overseeing the production is a dream come true.”

Evita tells the story of Eva Peron, wife of Argentine dictator Juan Peron, from her humble beginnings through to the extraordinary wealth, power and status which ultimately led her to be heralded as the ‘spiritual leader of the nation’ by the Argentine people.

The show features some of the best-loved songs in musical theatre, including Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, On This Night of a Thousand Stars, Oh What A Circus, You Must Love Me, and Another Suitcase in Another Hall.

Casting details haven’t been confirmed just yet but check back here for more news very soon.
