Shrek the Musical: the fairytale musical comedy makes its Australian premiere

Shrek the Musical has landed in Australia and we've got a sneak peek for you

Shrek The Musical has officially landed at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre and if reviews are anything to go by, this production is not to be missed.

Magic, music, friendship, and fairy tales come together in this spectacular production, bringing to life one of the most loved Dreamworks films of the early 2000s.

The action and adventure you remember is all still there, as is the fun – with practical jokes keeping audiences in fits of laughter throughout.

William Steig’s story, David Lindsay-Abaire’s lyrics and Jeanine Tesori’s music combine with the incredible cast to ensure that this enchanting tale is elevated far beyond Shrek’s film world and into a spectacle and experience entirely of its own. Yes, we said it, it’s that good.

The sets, costumes, and puppet design – thanks to the expertise of Tim Hatley – are exceptional, with whimsical scenes and fantastic wigs, makeup, and outfits bringing these animated characters to life right before your eyes. Attention to detail is definitely not lacking.

Don’t take our word for it though, hear what audiences had to say after opening night.

First opening on Broadway in 2008 – and scoring eight Tony Award nominations in the process – the debut Australian production stars Ben Mingay as Shrek, Lucy Durack as Princess Fiona, Todd McKenney as Lord Farquaad and Marcia Hines as the Dragon.

Expect big laughs, great dancing and breathtaking scenery alongside a score jam-packed with 19 terrific tunes.

Shrek the Musical is making its way to Australia in January 2020 and we couldn’t be more excited that this Broadway hit is finally headed our way.

Based on the 2001 DreamWorks film, Shrek tells the story of an unlikely hero, the ogre Shrek who, after finding his beloved swamp overrun by fairy tale characters who have been banished, makes a deal with evil ruler Lord Farquaad to rescue Princess Fiona, who Farquaad intends to marry, in order to get his swamp back. Shrek ends up falling for the princess but Fiona has an ogre-sized secret of her own.

Making its Broadway debut in 2008, the production was nominated for eight Tony awards and ran for over a year. With a new original score by Tony-winning composer Jeanine Tesori and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Lindsay-Abaire, this is a brilliant work backed by a beloved story.

The Australian cast will include Ben Mingay as Shrek, known for roles on both stage and screen including the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera, Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys and Billy in Dirty Dancing. His screen credits include Packed to the Rafters, Wonderland and of course House of Bond as Alan Bond.

Lucy Durack will play Princess Fiona, perhaps best known for her portrayal as Glinda/Galinda the good in the Australian premiere of Wicked and Elle Woods in Legally Blonde the Musical. Durack has since added multiple screen credits to her name including Sisters, Doctor Doctor, The Letdown, Now Add Honey, and Upper Middle Bogan.

Making a special appearance as the Dragon in Sydney will be the legendary former Queen of Pop, Marcia Hines. An Aria Hall of Famer and popular Australian Idol judge, Hines is no stranger to the stage, performing in the musical Hair at just 16 and most recently slaying it as ‘The Diva’ in Saturday Night Fever.

We can’t wait to fall in love with Shrek and donkey and the whole cast of fairy tale characters when Shrek the Musical arrives in January. If you’re as excited as we are for this Australian premiere tickets are on sale now via
