North By Northwest: Stage adaption of Hitchcock classic coming to Sydney in March 2022

"In the world of advertising, there's no such thing as a lie. There's only expedient exaggeration."

Following sell out seasons in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane the UK, and Toronto, the stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller North by Northwest is coming to Sydney in 2022.

Re-imagined for the stage and combining the magic of film and theatre, the North By Northwest stage adaptation has every twist, every thrill, and every hairbreadth escape from Hitchcock’s original work.

For those unfamiliar with North By Northwest‘s storyline, advertising exec Roger O. Thornhill’s uneventful life is turned upside down when he is thrust into a world of espionage, romance, and murder. He’s abducted by thugs who insist he’s a government agent named George Kaplan, and hunted by ruthless spies.

From the skyscraper canyons of New York City to the Black Hills of South Dakota, car rides down twisting roads, a love affair on a train, and the famous cliffhanger ending on Mount Rushmore – it’s all beautifully recreated live on stage.

One of Australia’s most popular entertainers, David Campbell will star in the role made famous by Cary Grant in the 1939 classic, Roger O. Thornhill – the suave advertising executive and man on the run. The singer, actor, television and radio presenter has dazzled audiences over the years with his dynamic performances, as Johnny O’Keefe in Shout! and, more recently, his Helpmann Award-winning portrayal of Bobby Darin in the hit musical Dream Lover.

This show has to be seen to be believed. I am thrilled to be working with this dynamite cast, and it really is exciting to be involved in live theatre at a time where it should be well and truly celebrated.

Joining Campbell onstage will be an array of acclaimed Australian actors including Helpmann Award winners Amber McMahon returning in the role as femme fatale Eve Kendall, beloved stage and screen actor Bert LaBonté as Vandamm, and theatre veteran Genevieve Lemon as Mrs Thornhill.

Playing a myriad of characters throughout the production are Nicholas BellBerynn SchwerdtDorje SwallowKaeng ChanLachlan WoodsSharon MillerchipTony Llewellyn Jones and Wadih Dona.

When I put on those meticulously 1950s-styled clothes and the 50s makeup and peroxide blonde wig and step on to the stage, there’s a whole world created on the stage. I’m certainly somewhere else, wherever North by Northwest is on the map. I’m certainly not the tomboy from Broken Hill anymore.
