Muriel’s Wedding the Musical has just revealed its leading lady, giving theatre fans even more reason to get excited for the show’s world premiere in Sydney.

20-year-old Maggie McKenna, from Melbourne, will make her professional stage debut in the lead role, making it a total dream come true for the theatre newcomer.

Sydney Theatre Company sat down with the excited performer, as they look ahead to the musical’s arrival at Sydney’s Roslyn Packer Theatre this November.

In the new interview, Maggie notes Wicked and Chicago as some of her favourite theatre experiences, explaining how they inspired her to move to LA to train as a professional performer after graduating.

Dishing some details on the songs in the show, Maggie told the mag, “There’s some ABBA, of course, and the music that Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall have written is so good at getting inside the heads of the characters.

“The songs feel modern and really authentic to what the characters are thinking in their heads but could never say in the movie. And the songs work so well with the script – it flows together. Muriel’s Wedding just makes so much sense as a musical.” Read the full interview here.

Muriel’s Wedding’s original movie writer-director, PJ Hogan, has adapted the script for the musical with music and lyrics by award-winning singer-songwriters Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. As Maggie mentioned, there’s also a few ABBA hits in there too.

Muriel’s Wedding The Musical opens at Roslyn Packer Theatre, Sydney on 6 November 2017 and is currently booking until 27 January 2018.
