As part of our support of International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating influential female figures in live entertainment, from music and theatre to comedy and sport.

Here, we take a look at four powerful and impactful theatre roles for women and the incredible talent who portray them.

33 Variations – Ellen Burstyn

33 Variations opens at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre this weekend telling the story of Katherine Brandt a musicologist who has dedicated her career to discovering the mystery of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. The role of Katherine will be portrayed by celebrated Hollywood actress Ellen Burstyn, an actress that has defied Hollywood’s expectations of women by continuing to work and perform from her Broadway debut in 1957 to now, flying across the world at 86 to perform in Australia. Muriel’s Wedding The Musical – Muriel & Rhonda

Muriel’s story is one that most girls can relate to – the feeling of isolation and not fitting in at home and wanting to escape. Muriel makes a few mistakes along the way, learning in the process what it means to be a friend, how to stand up for herself, and what her priorities should be in life. A classic coming of age story that celebrates female friendship, Muriel’s Wedding The Musical is a story worth celebrating. With a cast that celebrates new Australian musical theatre talent with Natalie Abbott as Muriel and Elizabeth Esguerra as Rhonda. Get Tickets Here

Come From Away – Beverly Bass

Broadway sensation Come from Away will head to the soon-to-be refurbished Comedy Theatre in July. A powerful new musical based on real people and real events telling a unique story about the aftermath of 9/11. One of the most powerful numbers in this show (that never fails to make us tear up) is the ballad, ‘Me And The Sky’ telling the incredible true story of Pilot Beverly Bass who was the first American female captain of an American Airlines aircraft and began her career flying for a mortician and had to constantly prove herself to her male colleagues. West Side Story – Anita

Set in the upper west side of New York City, the Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim musical used the classic Shakespearean love story of Romeo and Juliet to tell a powerful story of interracial tension in post-war Manhattan. While West Side Story might be seen as a male-dominated story, the character of Anita is a fantastic example of a woman who knows what she wants and is willing to fight for what she believes in. Anita fights for those she loves and doesn’t take anything less than the best from all the men in her life. Get Tickets Here
