Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour have announced their full cast for this year’s production of the award-winning West Side Story.

Australian leading lady Julie Lea Goodwin will play the role of Maria. An opera/musical theatre crossover artist, Julie made her name in Australian theatre winning the role of Christine Daae in The Phantom of the Opera when she was just 19. Performing with Opera Australia since 2015, Julie has performed over ten roles with the company with six more coming up in 2019.

The role of Tony will be played by Alexander Lewis, an international performer who has made a name in both opera and musical theatre. Performing with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, Komische Oper Berlin, The Washington National Opera, and all across Australia Alexander is a celebrated Australian tenor.

Melbourne born Karli Dinardo will play the role of Anita. A rising musical theatre performer Karli has appeared in U.S. Productions of Hamilton (National tour), West Side Story (Carnegie Hall) and Flashdance (National Tour). Karli will get to share the stage with her sister Luca Dinardo, who will play Jets tomboy Anybodys.

Making his Australian debut Puerto Rican performer, Waldemar Quiñones-Villanueva will take on the role of Bernardo. Waldemar appeared in the Broadway production of West Side Story as well as international tours of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Billy Elliot, and Evita.

Jets leader Riff will be played by Mark Hill (Gypsy, Muriel’s Wedding the Musical), while his second in command Diesel will be played by Rubin Matters (Wizard of Oz, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang).

Michael Beckley, best known for his role on Home and Away as well as roles on stage in Melba and Mamma Mia, will play the role of Officer Krupke with Jay James Moody (The Book of Mormon, A Cheery Soul) as Glad Hand.

We couldn’t be more excited about the incredible collective talent of this cast. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour will run from Friday March 22 – Sunday April 21 at Mrs Macquaries Point.
