After sold out seasons on the West End and Broadway, Girl From The North Country has taken the theatrical world by storm and now it’s set to make its long-awaited debut in Australia in 2022.

Featuring beautiful re-imaginings of songs from one of music’s most celebrated storytellers Bob Dylan and a story written and directed by multi award-winner Conor McPherson, Girl From The North Country has quickly become one of the most critically acclaimed multi award-winning productions of the 21st Century.

And now it’s set to arrive in Australia, opening at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre in April 2022.

Every now and then a show or character has a profound effect on you…Girl from the North Country and Elizabeth Laine were that for me, and I am thrilled to be part of an incredible ensemble cast for the Australian [season]…With music and lyrics by the legendary Bob Dylan, set to a beautiful book written by Conor McPherson, I know audiences will share in a memorable theatrical experience.

Girl From The North Country Australian Season Dates
WHEN: Opens in April 2022

WHERE: Comedy Theatre, Melbourne

TICKETS: On sale via from Wednesday 15 December.

The heart-wrenching production tells the story of American life in 1934 Minnesota – centring on a community living on a knife-edge in the local guesthouse: the owner, Nick, owes more money than he can ever repay, his wife Elizabeth is losing her mind and their daughter Marianne is carrying a child no-one will account for. And, when a preacher selling bibles, and a boxer looking for a comeback turn up in the middle of the night, things start to spiral beyond the point of no return.

Featuring some of Bob Dylan’s most loved singles, as well as some lesser known deep cuts, reimagined like you’ve never heard them before – including ‘Hurricane’, ‘I Want You’, ‘Slow Train Coming’, ‘Lay Lady Lay’ and ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ – Girl From The North Country stars multi Gold Logie winner Lisa McCune (King And I, South Pacific), Zahra Newman (The Book of Mormon, Wentworth), Terence Crawford (Escape from Pretoria, 1984), Helen Dallimore (Wicked [London], Legally Blonde) and Helpmann Award winner Peter Carroll.

What are the critics saying about Girl From The North Country?

A ravishing production! Bob Dylan’s songs have never sounded so heartbreakingly personal and universal. As close as mortals come to heaven on earth.

Nothing quite prepares you for Girl From the North Country. Not the first, but certainly the best, musical featuring the songs of Bob Dylan: It’s as audacious, enlightening, and exasperating as the man himself.

There is the music, orchestrated by Simon Hale for piano, fiddle and harmonica, hauntingly arranged (Hale again) for voices that huddle around a radio microphone as though against the cold. These 21 songs, some familiar (‘Like a Rolling Stone’), some more obscure (‘Duquesne Whistle’, from 2012)…remind us of Dylan’s bardic strengths, his hymning of loneliness and a very American kind of longing.

As directed by the playwright, an inspired ensemble of actor-singers assume the identities of residents of the boarding house, along with those people from town who drop in to share in the misery…Anyone who associates Dylan’s songs exclusively with his own eccentric delivery of them should be astounded by the depth and insights that professional actors with great voices can bring to them.
