Everything you need to know about The Book of Mormon in Melbourne

When one of the world’s most popular musicals comes to town, you have to prepare yourself accordingly.

So with the arrival of The Book of Mormon to Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in January 2017, it’s time to sharpen your wit and get up to speed on the hit show.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Book of Mormon before it opens in Melbourne:

The brains behind the operation

There’s a reason The Book of Mormon is so often uttered in the same sentence as South Park and that’s because it’s the result of the same creative duo, Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Which means it’s suitably offensive to just about everyone and is crammed full of wonderfully cringe moments.

Expect songs that get stuck in your head

Parker and Stone worked with Avenue Q’s Robert Lopez to co-create the production. For those that didn’t read up on Lopez in our Avenue Q preview, it’s worth warning you that he is also responsible for Frozen’s Let It Go. Why the heads up? Because he’s got a knack for penning songs that don’t leave your head for weeks.

It’s a hit with critics

Let’s face it, no one really expected a musical by the creators of South Park to become one of the biggest shows on Broadway. Let alone bagging endless critical acclaim. With nine Tony Awards, four Olivier Awards and a Grammy to its name, you could say A Book of Mormon proved the doubters wrong. Plus, everyone from Vogue to Trip Advisor has showered the show in praise.

The plot (without giving too much away)

The Book of Mormon follows two young missionaries (Elder Price and Elder Cunningham) who are sent to Ugandan to try to convert citizens to Mormon religion. One is a go-getter, the other, a socially awkward geek-type. Faced with the reality of famine, illness, violence and poverty, the pair quickly realise their mission isn’t quite so straight-forward.
