4 first must-sees at Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2017

It’s that time of year again, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is rolling into town and our jobs immediately become 90% ticket envy.

Unsurprisingly we’ve already spent the majority of our wages on tickets for some of the most up and coming names at this year’s festival, so we thought we’d share our first favourites with you. Starting with these four…

Geraldine Quinn: Fox Poncing

It’s unsurprising to anyone who knows Geraldine Quinn even in passing that her 2017 show will pay tribute to David Bowie. She is a spectacular performer with a large helping of fabulous herself so how could she not? We can’t not steal her own definitions to explain her show’s title:

‘Fox: red-haired omnivorous species introduced to Australia and widely considered a pest. Adept at getting into and out of sticky situations.’

‘Poncing: magnificent, sparkling self-assured pomp and strut, oftentimes onstage. Reclaimed pejorative.’

Josh Earl’s Festival

Josh Earl’s 2017 show promises to be a wild ride, as he and Daniel Tobias (Die Roten Punkte) team up to bring us all the ridiculous and sublime experiences of attending a music festival crammed into one hour. Josh has been on my ‘always see’ list for several years, but the theme of this show is already making me impatient for next April.

Cal Wilson: Things I’ve Never Said

I haven’t seen Cal Wilson perform for a couple of years now, which makes me sad because her shows always bring me so much joy.  In 2017 she’s going in no holds barred, her show blurb promising feminism and politics, both of which I’m dying to hear her takes on.

Watson: Go to Hell!

This will be the third Watson MICF show I see, and I’m looking forward to the promise of the terrifying scenario involving ‘no light, no escape and no wifi’. I bet they make the audience turn their phones off, too. Horrifying! Seriously, though, Watson mingled horror and comedy beautifully in 2015, and I’m so chuffed they’re doing it again in 2017.

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival runs from the 29th of March 2017 until the 23rd of April 2017 at various venues all over Melbourne and Victoria.
