Christmas Eve will play host to the Sydney Thunder’s first home game of the BBL season…and it’s a big one.

The Thunder’s home campaign will start on Christmas Eve with the ‘Sydney Smash’ as they face the Sydney Sixers at Spotless, starting at 7.15pm. The Thunder have added some serious talent to their squad for BBL|08 – including the huge pick-up of Joe Root, as well as retaining Jos Buttler. Root is the Test Captain of England’s national team, while Buttler is an England regular in all forms of the game and returns after a successful six games for the Thunder last season. Shane Watson will again captain the side.

The Thunder will play five games at Spotless Stadium this season, including several WBBL doubleheaders. The Sydney Thunder Women will compete in doubleheaders on Monday 24 December (v Hurricanes WBBL), Wednesday 2 January (v Sixers WBBL) and Tuesday 8 January (v Renegades WBBL).

The Thunder will be looking to improve on last campaign’s sixth-placed finish, with stalwart since BBL|02 Gurinder Sandhu describing this squad as “one of the better squads of the last three to four years. We have all bases covered and we’ve got players ready to go if others get injured.”
