All the details

The 2019 Presidents Cup marks just the third time in 25 years (held biennially) that the tournament will take place in Victoria.

The tournament puts the USA against a team of Internationals, made up of the rest of the world minus Europe. The tournament was last held in Melbourne in 2011, at the same course. The Captains for the 2019 tournament were announced earlier in the year as Tiger Woods for the USA and South African Ernie Els for the International team. It will be the first time both players are captaining their respective sides in the Presidents Cup, but each holds a wealth of experience in the tournament, having both competed eight times previously. Both also served as Captain’s assistants in 2017’s Presidents Cup.

PGA TOUR Commissioner spoke about the Captain’s announcement as it was made, saying, “Ernie Els and Tiger Woods have each been part of the fabric of the Presidents Cup as competitors and as ambassadors to the event.

“Ernie carries the flag for international golf as a legendary figure both on and off the golf course, while Tiger has been one of the most transcendent athletes the sport has ever seen.”

What the Captains had to say

After being announced as the USA Presidents Cup Captain for 2019, Tiger Woods spoke about the privilege, saying, “I’m proud to follow in the footsteps of past captains like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin, Ken Venturi, Fred Couples, Jay Haas and Steve Stricker. The core group of players on the U.S. Team have a lot of talent, enthusiasm and great team camaraderie.”

Ernie Els also discussed his captaincy, saying, “To be named captain of the team is an incredible honour. There is a fun and talented group of young players emerging from all across the globe for the International Team, and I am eager to accept the responsibility of building a winner when we face the United States at one of my favourite courses and cities in the world at Royal Melbourne. Tiger and I have had some great duels in the past, and I look forward to the challenge of going against my longtime friend yet again in 2019.”

The format

Following the conclusion of the 2019 TOUR Championship, the top eight ranked players from both USA and the Internationals will automatically qualify for the 2019 Presidents Cup. At a later date, each team Captain will then select four additional players to compete.

The tournament will consist of 30 matches, including nine Foursomes (alternate shot) and nine Four-ball (better ball) matches. On the final day (Sunday 15 December), there will be an additional 12 Singles matches, with all players involved. Tied Singles matches after all 18 holes will then go to extra playoff holes to determine a winner (there are no playoffs in Foursomes or Four-ball).
