Melbourne ice hockey has returned to the O’Brien Icehouse on the Docklands.

The Australian Ice Hockey League began over the weekend, with Melbourne’s two resident teams both getting off to the perfect start.

Melbourne Mustangs and Melbourne Ice will both play home games out of the O’Brien Icehouse this season, with each side getting a win over the Adelaide Adrenaline on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Mustangs took out a 6-2 victory, while the Ice just pipped the Adrenaline 6-5.

While more synonymous with the cooler climates of Canada and the USA, ice hockey in Australia is ever-growing, and has added another exciting and diverse element to the Australian sporting landscape.

For any Melbourne sporting fans that are yet to witness ice hockey live, it truly is a spectacle that must be experienced. The combination of physicality and skill involved in the sport is guaranteed to draw your appreciation.

Melbourne is lucky enough to have two elite sides competing at a state-of-the-art rink, the Icehouse Arena. The Melbourne Mustangs and Melbourne Ice compete in the AIHL with CBR Brave (Canberra), Sydney Bears, Sydney Ice Dogs, Adelaide Adrenaline, Newcastle Northstars and Perth Thunder.

Both Melbourne sides will go head-to-head in the Melbourne derby on Friday 10 May, with puck drop at 7.30pm. The following day (11 May) the Mustangs will host the Ice Dogs, before the Ice host the Ice Dogs on the Sunday (12 May).

To fully appreciate Melbourne as the sporting capital of the world, make sure you head down to the O’Brien Icehouse this season. We guarantee you’ll be hooked.
