Geelong to face Sydney in Sir Doug Nicholls Round
The Cats will wear their 2019 Indigenous guernsey, designed by their very own Quinton Narkle in their round 11 clash.
Geelong are back at GMHBA Stadium this weekend to face Sydney in the Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
The Cats will wear a special Quinton Narkle-designed Indigenous guernsey for the game, after first wearing it last week in their Round 10 clash against Gold Coast.
Narkle was approached by the club late in 2018 to design what is the fourth Indigenous guernsey the Club has produced. Narkle gratefully accepted and has been working closely with Cotton On to produce the final design that the players will proudly wear on Saturday afternoon.
The top of the table Cats will host Sydney on Saturday 1 June, starting at 4.35pm. Sitting pretty at 9-1, Geelong have won their past six and will head into the clash as hot favourites.
The guernsey design manages to incorporate and represent a number of significant stories close to the Club and it’s Indigenous players, past and present. This includes a connection to the Geelong region of Wadawurrung Country, Quinton’s own region in Western Australia, the language of all seven current Geelong Indigenous players, as well as a tribute to Club legend Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer.
Geelong’s seven current Indigenous players includes Narkle, Nakia Cockatoo, Jamaine Jones, Tim Kelly, Nathan Kreuger, Brandan Parfitt and Blake Schlensog.
Speaking of the guernsey, Narkle says, “It’s a great honour to have been asked to design the club’s Indigenous guernsey.
“I wanted the design to represent all seven Indigenous players while recognising their individual language groups.
“The guernsey includes Bunjil, the eagle, the creator of the Wadawurrung and Kulin nations. The Giant Trevally represents our connection with the Arnhem Land region and the snake-like pattern throughout the whole jumper symbolises the rainbow serpent which is the creator of my own region,” he says.
“As a sign of respect for Polly Farmer, his number 5 appears on the front and back of the guernsey. A tribute to him and all he has done for the Geelong Football Club and Indigenous players.”
