Machine Age – Dust

On Dust, this is the most self-assured Machine Age we’ve met, and just as they have with every previous release, they continue to step things up. It’s been a slow and steady drip of releases from the band – dropping one single a year since 2015 – and Dust has us absolutely hooked. Mixing huge electronic beats with soaring vocal hooks, it’s hard to sit still while this one’s playing. This is the first taste of their debut album Point of Departure and we can’t wait to see what else they’ve got in store for us. More please!

Catfish and the Bottlemen – Fluctuate

The second taste of Catfish and the Bottlemen’s forthcoming third album has us excited for what’s to come. Fluctuate is a huge rock anthem, heavier than what we’re used to, but still quintessentially Catfish – and it’s got two big thumbs up from us. Aussie fans already got a taste of how this one is going to go down live when Catfish and the Bottlemen stopped over briefly for a New Year’s Falls Festival celebration, but add in some huge crowd singalongs and Fluctuate might end up being a live favourite.

Ceres – Me & You

If this song was released 15 years ago, there is no doubt it would have featured in an episode of The OC, probably soundtracking one of those cute love scenes between Summer and Seth. It’s giving us early 2000’s emo-rock vibes in the best way possible. Packed with huge riffs and hooks for days, Ceres sure know how to craft an anthem that’s as readymade for sunny roadtrips as it is for screaming along to in the privacy of your bedroom. Of the forthcoming album it comes from, vocalist Tom Lanyon says, “It’s for love. For responsibility. For growing old and for looking up. It’s the hardest we’ve ever worked on something. And finally—it can be for you.” The album arrives on Friday 26 April.

Rex Orange County – New House

It’s been a hot minute, but we’re pretty stoked to have some new Rex Orange County to wrap our ears around. On his first original single since 2017, Rex delivers more of the signature sound we love, combining elements of jazz, hip hop, and bedroom electronica to create grooving, piano-led jams that are sure to be stuck in your head for days. New House is a tender, stripped back tune, perfect for the season of love – whether you’re loving yourself or someone else – and even though Rex just left Australian shores, we miss him already. Come back soon!!!

Julia Jacklin – Comfort

On her forthcoming album Crushing, Julia Jacklin lays herself bare. The record is a revealing and intimate look inside Jacklin’s mind, as she takes listeners through the heartache of a breakup, and the healing thereafter. Where her previous three singles have marked the opening tracks of the album – and the beginning of the narrative journey – Comfort falls at the tail-end, it’s the sparse lullaby that closes the album and promises that things will get better. Here Jacklin’s vocal soars, carried by nothing more than a simple, tender melody. It’s a fitting conclusion to what is a beautiful album. Catch Julia Jacklin at The Forum, Melbourne on Thursday 14 March. Tickets are on sale here.

Alexisonfire – Familiar Drugs

Can you believe Alexisonfire are out here dropping surprise new singles like it’s 2011 and nothing has changed? We have been hanging onto rumours of new music since Alexisonfire blew our minds when they stormed through the country in 2016, but now that we actually have it, it’s hard to believe it’s real. Maybe part of the reason the track sounds so timeless is because it’s built off a riff that was written and forgotten about ten years ago, or maybe it’s because we’ve all been holding our breath for a decade. Either way, we’re stoked to finally have some new Alexisonfire to listen to.

Fontaines D.C. – Big

If you’ve got your eyes locked on the UK’s music news, you’re probably familiar with Fontaines D.C. by now – if not, here’s your introduction. Following in the footsteps of the likes of Shame and Idles, Fontaines are the latest hype band, and they deserve every single bit of attention they’re getting. Big is a mission statement if we’ve ever heard one. Marking the opening of their forthcoming debut album, the track is in and out in less than two minutes, but it tells you everything you need to know about what Fontaines are throwing down. Their debut album Dogrel is going to be huge, so you best get amongst it now.

Sea Girls – Open Up Your Head

They’ve been given the nod of approval across UK music press, and with the release of Open Up Your Head, Sea Girls have definitely started 2019 the right way. Readymade for packed-venue singalongs, their latest anthem leads into a year that already looks pretty chock full of shows and festivals, and with an album rumoured to be arriving later this year Sea Girls have set themselves up to become one of the next big things on the international rock scene. Keep your eyes and ears here.

Yonaka – Bad Company

With the announcement of their debut album, Yonaka are another band we want to make sure you get to know as soon as possible. Rock riffs with huge pop hooks, Yonaka are incredible, and their latest single Bad Company showcases everything that they do well perfectly. We know we’re saying it alot, but we’re pegging Don’t Wait ’Til Tomorrow as a potential album of the year and even with just one spin of this new single we’re certain you too will envision them headling the world’s biggest festivals in no time. What a glorious time to be alive when bands this good are really starting to make their break.
