Sounds Australia has announced an incredible event to help support the group of Australian artists who were scheduled to play the now-cancelled SXSW Festival over in Austin, Texas.

The local export body, which creates pathways for Australian artists to perform abroad, released a statement last week to say it was “heartbroken” for Australian and New Zealand artists but understood the need to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Originally set to launch today, SXSW Festival – whose purpose is to “create an opportunity for creative people to develop their careers by bringing together people from around the globe to meet, learn and share ideas” – was set to host hundreds of up and coming musicians from right around the world, including a weighty list of incredible Australian acts.

Alongside SXSW live showcases, many of the artists has also booked in American tours – some heading over for the first time – that have also had to be cancelled.

To try and stem some of the loss and ensure these incredible artists still get to showcase just how great they are, Sounds Australia has announced 3 For Stream, a unique live-streamed music showcase.

That’s right, thanks to Sounds Aus, you get to check out 19 Australian artists from the comfort of your own home.

These acts include Sydney singer-songwriter Alex The Astronaut, rockers Cable Ties, alt-folk artist Didirri, and proud Naarm-based Wergaia/Wemba Wemba singer-songwriter Alice Skye.

“Ever since I started with Sounds Australia in 2018, we’ve been discussing the idea of creating live-streamed showcases as a way to reach an infinite number of music industry representatives and reduce our carbon footprint,” Sounds Australia’s Digital Export Producer, Dom Alessio, said in a press statement.

“The unfortunate cancellation of SXSW provides a unique environment to put this model to the test. We’re living in extraordinary times and we want to ensure that even if Australian artists’ mobility is restricted, their music can still be experienced by industry and fans across the world.”

The event will feature back-to-back performances live-streamed from Melbourne’s iconic Bakehouse Studios to an international audience of music industry buyers, media and new fans through Sounds Australia’s Facebook page. Over four wonderful hours, the 19 acts will perform across three stages – each performing a special three-song set.
