What’s on at Geddes Lane Ballroom

Geddes Lane Ballroom are bringing live music back to Melbourne's King Street, and with a stack of great shows already locked in now's the time to check it out.

Known as The Grainstore Tavern throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, the 170-year old bluestone building that is now home to Geddes Lane Ballroom is dripping in music history.

It’s been part of some legendary live music moments including being the location John Farnham launched his monumental album, Whispering Jack.

There’s always a slew of huge shows rolling through Geddes Lane, covering everything from raucous punk, to fire Aussie hip hop, and acoustic wonders there’s something for every taste – here’s the lowdown.

Hiatus Kaiyote After Party

Clever Austin ft. Jon Bap - Blue Tongue

Hiatus Kaiyote are returning to Melbourne for a huge home town, but the party doesn’t stop when the sold-out show does. The band will be rolling down to Geddes Lane Ballroom right after the show wraps up to celebrate the festivities. Clever Austin, Lori, and Silent Jay will all be hitting the decks – what better way to spend your Thursday night. It’s going down on Thursday 30 May, tickets are available via Ticketweb.

Someparty

SilentJay x Jace XL - Rockabye (Official Video)

On the last Friday of every month, Someparty will bring a double dose of R&B and hip hop to Geddes Lane Ballroom. Hosted by JACE XL and featuring local live acts, DJs, and dancers, you know it’s going to be huge. The first drop of acts has landed, so get ready to spend your night with Iva Lamkum, Soju, Tatafu, and MzRizk. It kicks off Friday 31 May, tickets via Ticketweb.

Swooping Duck

Swooping Duck is the natural result of a group of inspired musicians riding a wave of their own curiosity and hyper-creativity. When playing under the name Hiatus Kaiyote, they are celebrated worldwide for their rare combination of technical wizardry and raw sonic force. In the meantime, their Swooping Duck project draws us deeper into the headspace of the trio, where their search for sounds sparks ideas that are built into entire worlds waiting to be explored. The group will perform at Geddes Lane Ballroom every Wednesday throughout June, with the first show on Wednesday 5 June – tickets via Ticketweb.

High Society

If you’re a fan of immersive dance performances and boisterous rhythms, you’ll be sure to enjoy this new monthly assembly featuring the Quarter St Orchestra, Uncomfortable Lounge, and Tenda McFly. Hosted by Miss Friby, High Society will also feature dance performances from Zelia Rose, Benjamin Hancock and Veronica Waite. Royal Funk Party: Batdance!

This year, the Royal Funk Party pays tribute to the greatest superhero of all – Batman! This year is the 30th birthday of Tim Burton’s “Batman” starring Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, and Jack Nicholson – and also Prince’s iconic song soundtrack! Lake Minnetonka will be headlining the night, with a mix of Prince covers as well as their original tunes. 音 – OTO

OTO is a technicolour exploration of sound and art that fuses the boundaries between music, art and fashion. Composed of both live and electronic music, the night will see an array of mediums working together to evoke a unique sense of being. Get ready to be warped into an augmented reality as all your senses are indulged with techno, jazz, soul, poetry, dance, visual art and everything in-between. Melbourne’s leading young female curators have joined forces to present to you a celebration of community, art, music, fashion and culture.  Chiara Kickdrum will team up with a host of support acts on the night including Lucky Periera, Jennifer Loveless, and more. Junglepussy

New York City’s self-love queen, Junglepussy is on her way. With support from seminal ‘Sydney’ voguers House of Slé and their rap weapon Jamaica, moody live flavours from NYUON and DJs UMAMI boss Stev Zar, Crown Ruler’s Lori and DJ Airhorn Mami, it’s safe to say Geddes Lane Ballroom is going to take on a whole new life. Bob Evans

Bob Evans - Don't You Think It's Time?

Since releasing his compilation album Full Circle last year, Bob Evans has been touring around the country in trio mode with piano and violin, with a five-piece band and solo with nothing more than his acoustic guitar. Now he’ll be wrapping up this chapter of his career by taking on the country solo – getting back to the roots that launched him into the musical stratosphere more than 16 years ago. New music will be roadtested and old classics will be shared, before Evans steps away for a little while. Catch Bob Evans when he stops through Geddes Lane Ballroom on Friday 30 August.
