Need to pick a song for a very specific situation? We’ve called in DJ/producer Generik to take us through some of his favourite tunes ahead of his set at Festival X this November and December.

Now flourishing in his second home, LA’s palm tree-lined Hollywood Boulevard, it has been a wonderful rise for Melbourne-born producer/DJ Generik (AKA Tyson O’Brien).

We were first introduced to Generik in 2014 with the release of his debut single ‘The Weekend’. Teaming up with Nicky Van She, the tune took everything he’d honed on stage – be it iconic Melbourne clubs like ONELOVE and SuperDisco or on European stages alongside Calvin Harris – crafted into a tasty, three-minute banger.

From there a slew of edits and singles followed – with remixes of Halsey’s ‘Bad At Love’ and Dillon Francis’ ‘Hello There’ taking his music to a whole new audience. He’s also started up his own label called You Do You to help foster the next generation of house and dance music aficionados.

Now you’re most likely to find him in a club in Las Vegas or somewhere across Europe. He’s a regular at Pacha Ibiza, Hakkasan, Wet Republic and Omnia Nightclub in Las Vegas and Bali, creating waves with his energy and crafting a distinct sound that is heavily influenced by his house music roots along the way.

He recently brought his sunny grooves and high-energy attitude to the UK’s Creamfields alongside a month-long residency at Ibiza’s Pacha nightclub so we’re certain he is well and truly warmed up for his Australian homecoming.

We know Generik knows a thing or two about curating a banger-filled playlist, so we decided to pick his brain and put his skills to the test. Check out Generik’s playlist below and we’ll see you on the dancefloor.

Give us the elevator pitch! Who are we chatting to?

G’day, I’m Generik. Currently, I’m living in Los Angeles, DJing in Las Vegas and touring the world playing house music.

A song you play to get the party started:

Peggy Gou – Starry Night. I love the vibe of this tune, a good way to ease into the party but still get you grooving.

A song you play to end a party:

Toto – Africa. My favourite song of all time, ultimate sing-along tune as well.

A song you play when you’re sad (but you want to lean into it):

Tame Impala – The Moment. Favourite band, this song just makes me happy and is the cure to sadness.

A song you play when you’re happy:

Halsey – Bad At Love (Generik Remix). This is my remix of Halsey, her voice is so god damn good. I’m so happy with the way this came out.

A song you play when you want to cheer someone else up:

Stardust – Music Sounds Better With You. Who wouldn’t want to hear that music sounds better with them? It’s like the ultimate compliment.

The first song you remember hearing:

The Rolling Stones – Start Me Up. Mum was a massive Stones fan. I remember her getting a CD for her birthday and it was the first song on the CD.

A song you’d play to introduce your music to a stranger:

Generik – Tony. This is a song I put out earlier this year. It’s sort of a coming of age song for me, an example of where I’ve been and where I’m going.

A song you’d play when it’s about to hit midnight on New Year’s Eve:

Daft Punk – One More Time. This is essentially the best NYE song. It’s fun, energetic and awesome.

A song you play first thing on Monday morning:

Rick James – Superfreak. Listening to the King of Funk is the best way to start the week, you’ll be dancing and singing in no time.

A song you play while you’re getting ready on Saturday night:

Martin Ikin – Hooked. Out on Fisher’s label Catch & Release and it’s a banger.

Your ultimate summer anthem?

Generik – Bunny. My new song. Go listen! Turn it up!

A song you’d play if you could only hear one song forever:

DJ Koze – Pick Up. I’ve heard this song so many times and it never gets old.
