Experience legendary Mozart at St Paul’s Cathedral

The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic and Melbourne University Choral Society are bringing together over 200 world-class musicians to perform three of Mozart’s most beloved works.
Set to the beautiful backdrop of St Paul’s Cathedral, the iconic Melbourne orchestra and choir will perform Great Mass in C minor, Clarinet Concerto and the Die Zauberflöte finale.
The famous Clarinet Concerto is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful of all Mozart’s orchestral works, and upheld as one of the composer’s most famous pieces of all time.
The Clarinet Concerto was also the musical genius’ last major instrumental piece, and thus one of his most poignant concertos.
Melbourne concert-goers will also be treated to a magnificent performance of the finale to Mozart’s most famous opera, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), and Mozart’s great sacred masterpiece the “Great” Mass in C minor K.427.
Die Zauberflöte was written by Mozart in two acts to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, and premiered on 30 September 1791 at Schikaneder’s theatre, the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, just two months before the composer’s premature death.
The Great Mass in C minor K. 427/417a was composed for a large orchestra, two choirs, and two sopranos, as well as tenor and bass soloists; naturally one of Mozart’s most grandiose and spectacular choral work.
The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic’s performance of these timeless Mozart works will take place on Saturday 12 May at St Paul’s Cathedral.
The performance will feature Philip Arkinstall on clarinet, Sopranos Suzanne Shakespeare and Greta Bradman, Tenor Michael Petuccelli, Baritone Oliver Boyd and Conductor Andrew Wailes, alongside Melbourne University Choral Society and the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra.
So whether you’re well versed in classical music or want to make this your first live experience, this trio of Mozart’s finest pieces is set to be nothing short of astonishing.
