Perth’s all-new Optus Stadium played host to one of this year’s most anticipated tours this weekend, welcoming Ed Sheeran to headline two nights in WA.

The British singer/songwriter swept Perth punters off their feet as his long-awaited ÷ (Divide) tour arrived at Optus Stadium.

As if the Ed Sheeran anticipation wasn’t enough, the two-night concert series also marked the first time Optus Stadium had been used as a concert venue, thus cementing the tour in the history books.

“Perth, will you make fools of yourself for me?” Ed asked the sea of adoring fans inside the Perth stadium, willing the audience (accompanying parents included) to loose their inhibitions for the night.

They did that, and then some, with the 60,000-strong crowd flooding the stadium with dazzling phone lights and euphoric backing vocals.

Melbourne singer-songwriter Missy Higgins shone like a star in her own right, having warmed the crowd up sufficiently before Ed’s headline set.

Ed had already made touring history with his 2018 ÷ (Divide) tour before touching down in Oz, having set a new record for the most number of stadium shows throughout New Zealand and Australia on one single tour.

He originally announced seven stadium dates, which quickly increased to fourteen; equaling AC/DC’s 2010 record.

However, due to phenomenal demand, four additional shows (Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Dunedin) resulted in a massive eighteen-date stadium run across Australasia this month.

Optus Stadium is milestone development for the live entertainment industry in Western Australia; the brand new, multi-purpose venue first opened to the public in January to host Cricket Australia.

The 60,000 seat venue is equipped to host AFL, rugby league and union, football (soccer), cricket and live music events.

The surrounding Stadium Park also offers year-round access, and is home to the BHP Boardwalk and Amphitheatre, the Chevron Parkland, children’s playgrounds, BBQ and picnic areas.

The landscape design around the park is inspired by the Indigenous six seasons, providing wind and shade protection.

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) tour continues onto Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney, before heading over to Auckland and Dunedin.
